Obituary

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Maye Beatrice Holmes was born Dec 5, 1926 in rural Beresford, SD to Oliver and Freda Holmes. She entered into Glory on September 3, 2020 at the age of 93.

Maye accepted Christ as her personal Savior as a young girl. She attended Glenwood and Pleasant Elementary and graduated salutatorian from Beresford High School. She enlisted in the US Army Cadet Nurse Corps in 1944 and graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in 1947.  She worked in the Sioux Valley Surgery Department at the hospital after graduation.  She married Deane Fahlberg at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church in rural Beresford on September 24, 1948. They made their home on the family farm and raised five children. In 1966 Maye started working as a nurse at Bethesda Home in Beresford and was employed there for 26 years.

Maye was a member of Brooklyn Free Church where she served in various music ministries. God blessed her with the ability to play piano music by ear and she utilized this talent to His Glory. Maye's love of music was central to her life and the source of blessing to many. She sang in the church choir, did a lot of solo work and served as organist and pianist for too many services, weddings and funerals to count. Most evenings Maye would play the piano for Deane and when alone for the last 10 years playing was a great source of comfort for her. Maye was a long-term member of Beresford Musical Arts Club. She attended several Bible Study groups and her desire was always to live a life pleasing to God and to serve Him.

Some of the precious memories are family vacations in northern Minnesota, traveling to Western Europe, visiting her mother's childhood home in Ljungby, Sweden and touring Scandinavia.

Among those who survive and who gratefully shared her life are her five children: Barbara McGehee of Brooklyn Park, MN, Frederick Fahlberg of Beresford, SD, Rebecca Fahlberg and Cynthia Toovi of Brooklyn Park, MN, Laurie (Mark) Spangler of Murray, NE and brother O. Wendell Holmes of Omaha, NE. Also surviving are grandchildren: Michael (Catherine) McGehee and David McGehee of Minneapolis, MN, Nick Fahlberg of Box Elder, SD, Lauren Olson of Sioux Falls, SD, Glenn (Rebecca) Spangler of Murray, NE, Ericka Spangler of Brighton CO and Gaël Toovi of Mpls, MN and great-grandchildren Paityn Maye Olson and Calvin Glenn Spangler.

Maye was preceded in death by her beloved husband Deane, her parents, sisters Eva Rieger and Berniece Peterson, grandson-in-law Doug Olson, granddaughter Molly McGehee, daughter-in-law Debra Fahlberg and sons-in-law, Wade McGehee and Eden Toovi.Mom had a heart for the Lord and passed along her faith and love of God to her children. Our hearts are filled with sadness at this earthly loss, but we look to the future with joyful anticipation of our reunion in Heaven.

A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday September 8, 2020 at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church. A burial will be held later. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to: Fred Fahlberg, 1009 Grandview Drive, Beresford, SD  57004.
