Obituary

Maxine Fayne (Hampton) Bayer was born in Walthill, Nebr. January 7, 1918 to Myrtle Ester (Rose) and Fayne Milton Hampton. Her family moved to a ranch near Oelrichs, South Dakota when she was small. She attended Windy Hill country school and later Central High in Omaha, Nebraska. She received training as a secretary and worked at Mutual of Omaha Insurance and the U.S. Army Air Corps office in Omaha. She also worked in the records room at the Sioux City Police Department until her retirement. She married Robert Franklin Bayer on May 17, 1943. They lived in Omaha, Carroll, Iowa; Scottsbluff, Nebraska; and Sioux City, Iowa. Maxine loved animals, riding horses, reading, and gardening. She was a member of the St. James Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. She was active in her church. She was an advocate for mentally retarded children and their families. She, with other parents, helped found several support groups and educational cooperatives to provide opportunities for retarded children. At that time, most retarded children were not allowed to attend public school. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Rose (age 9), her sister Lucille, and her husband. Grateful for having shared her life are: her daughter, Margaret, Beresford, SD; nephews: Bruce Wampler (Trina), Colorado; Robert Bullard (Mary Lou), Florida; Rodney (Joan) Bullard, Omaha; and nieces: Kay Marie Hughes, Michigan; Frances Mae Deck, Wyoming; Kathy,Karen, and Terri Mullen, Lincoln. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM, Wednesday, January 23 at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford, SD.
