Mavis Jean Austin was born July 3, 1927 in Lincoln County, SD to parents George and Tillie (Johnson) Ende. She passed away on August 19, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville, SD at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 16 days. Mavis was raised on a farm near Beresford, SD. She attended multiple country schools and graduated from Beresford High School in 1945. She received a teaching certificate from Springfield College and taught at several rural schools in the Beresford area. Mavis married Curtis Austin on June 22, 1948 in Slayton, MN. They lived and farmed in the Alsen area for two years and then moved to their farm in the Dalesburg area where they raised their family. The couple retired from the life of farming in 1993 and moved to Beresford. Mavis was actively involved in the community as a 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher and other church activities. Her fondest memories were at the lake with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband Curtis Austin of Beresford; daughter Carol Johnson and husband Rick of Volin, SD; two sons, Chris Austin and wife Nella of Bloomington, MN and Clair Austin and wife Dawn of Redwing, MN; 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild; foster son Roger Bursell and wife Sharon of Sioux Falls; her brother Dale Ende and wife Norma of Beresford; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law Mildred (Bill) Mausbach. Funeral services will be held 10:30AM, Thursday, August 23, 2012 at Dalesburg Lutheran Church, rural Vermillion with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
