Marlys Y. Hughes was born June 7, 1934 near Nora, SD to parents Oscar and Alice (Hansen) Berg. She died May 2, 2014 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 25 days. Marlys attended Star rural school and graduated from Alcester High School in 1952. She married Richard Hughes on June 30, 1954. The couple has lived in Alcester their entire married life. Marlys was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and later became a member of the United Church of Christ where she was active in many roles. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crafts, shopping, and playing games. Marlys looked forward to her weekly coffee groups. Her family was her greatest love in life as she enjoyed all the time they spent together. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Rodney Berg and sister-in-law Barbara Berg. Survivors include her husband Dick; four children, Heidi Zweifel, Todd (Deb) Hughes, Barry (Pam) Hughes and Steve (Belva) Hughes, all of Alcester; 10 grandchildren, Jaclyn (Jason) Thompson, Rochester, MN, Jessica (Matt) Larson, Sartell, MN, Jenna (Derek) Sinner, Webster, SD, Jake Hughes (Christina Kuperus), Sioux Falls, Justin (Christine) Hughes, Sioux Falls, Tricia (Jonah) King, Lincoln, NE, Adam Hughes, Alcester, Cory (Mary) Hughes, Sioux Falls, A.J. (Caroline) Mockler, Northport, AL, and Joe Zweifel, Alcester; 17 great grandchildren, Isaac, Eli, Alexis, Noah, Ty, Jonas, Hazel Rose, Hunter, Ana, Mia, Ian, Leia, Jack, Caroline, Hazel, Olivia and Marlys; her brother Allen Berg, Sioux Falls; sister-in-law Pat Berg, Alcester; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at the United Church of Christ in Alcester with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Alcester. Visitation will be Monday from 6PM to 8PM at the church.
