Marlene Ethelyn Voegeli was born January 3, 1939 in Clay County, South Dakota to Frank and Ethel (Johnson) Hakl. She passed away August 7, 2024, surrounded by her family, in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 85 years.
Marlene was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and was an active church member throughout her life. She was raised with her three brothers on their family farms in Clay and Lincoln counties, and went to country schools before attending and graduating from Alcester High School in 1957. Following graduation, she worked in Sioux Falls until she was united in marriage to Paul Voegeli on June 28, 1959 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester. They made their home on a farm east of Beresford where they raised their four children. Marlene loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them and providing for them. She worked hard as a farm wife and enjoyed doing fieldwork in the spring and continued to help with harvest well into her retirement years. Following Paul's death in 2000, Marlene continued to live on the farm until late 2017 when she moved into Beresford where she resided until February of this year.
Marlene was an excellent homemaker. She was a great cook and enjoyed baking for her family and hosting gatherings. She was a talented and meticulous seamstress and enjoyed sewing various items for family and friends. She also sewed many church banners for Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Her other hobbies included quilting, hardanger, ceramics, painting, and jigsaw puzzles. Marlene loved being outdoors gardening, landscaping, and caring for her yard and flowers. Her daily coffee times and friendships with the ladies at the flower shop were very important to her. She also enjoyed traveling and went on numerous bus trips with friends and visited her brother in Australia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; a son in infancy, and her parents.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Beth (Robert) Schlup of Sioux Falls, Elaine (Dean) Hammer of Dell Rapids, Allen (Lisa) Voegeli and Charles Voegeli all of Beresford; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Laura (Christopher) Koelker and their three children, Hudson, Grace and Micah; Allison (Jake) Harris and their three children, Avery, Casey and Olivia; Marissa (Anthony) Dyk, Hannah Hammer all of Sioux Falls, Benjamin Hammer and his fiancé, Lauren Solerno of Omaha, Chloe Voegeli (Tanner Knutson) and Alex Voegeli of Beresford.
