Marilyn Joan Sommervold was born March 5, 1940 in rural Union County, SD to parents Arnold and Margaret (Jacobs) Powell. She died April 4, 2011 at Sanford Vermillion Hospital at the age of 71 years. After graduating from high school, Marilyn studied childhood development and became a nanny for a family with a special needs child in Sioux City. She was united in marriage to Richard Sommervold on February 5, 1961. They were blessed with four children: Rhoda, Bryan, Dean and Tammy. Marilyn was a housewife and worked at Casey's in Akron and Beresford where she was known as the "pizza lady". Marilyn was baptized and confirmed at Union Creek Lutheran Church and was currently a member of Roseni Lutheran Church. She was known for years for baking cookies for the Nora Store Christmas and enjoyed sewing, quilting and embroidery. Survivors include her husband of 50 years Richard of Alcester; four children, Rhoda Steeneck of Vermillion, Bryan and wife Chonette of Alcester, Dean and wife Wendy of Alcester, and Tammy Sommervold-Jupiter and husband Ron of Brandon, SD; 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Ellen Powell of Akron, IA; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Marvin and Morris Powell. Funeral services will be 2:00PM, Friday, April 8, 2011 at Roseni Lutheran Church with burial to follow at Nora Cemetery, rural Alcester. Visitation will be Thursday from 5PM to 8PM with family present from 7PM to 8PM with a prayer service beginning at 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford. Memorials may be directed to DHF- Vermillion Hospice or the Nora Store Restoration Fund.
