Marian Ruth Heimes was born July 22, 1921 to parents Charles and Margaret (Backlin) Johnson. She went to Heaven to be with her beloved Lord, on October 31, 2014 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD in the company of her children, at the age of 93 years, 3 months, and 9 days. Marian completed 8 years at Clay Pointe rural school, graduated from Vermillion High School in 1939, and attended Tri-State College in Sioux City, IA. She was then elected as Clay County Deputy Auditor and Clerk of Courts. In 1947 she married Irvin Heimes and lived in Vermillion until 1952 when they moved to the Beresford area where they farmed and raised their 4 children. Marian was a lifelong member of Dalesburg Lutheran Church where her love for Jesus was shown by serving as financial secretary for 27 years and volunteering in many other roles. She sewed numerous quilt tops that were later tied at WELCA meetings. Her love for quilting also showed by the doll quilts she sewed for her daughter JoAnn, which were given to her students. In addition she sewed baby quilts for each of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and relatives. Marian enjoyed traveling with Irvin. They took a trip with their daughter JoAnn to Sweden where they were able to see where Marian's parents lived. The couple made two trips to Hawaii to visit their daughter Nancy, who was stationed there in the Navy. She also made several trips to Wyoming, California, and other states to visit relatives. She and Irvin attended threshing bees where he displayed his restored, antique John Deere tractors. Marian was a wonderful hostess. Her home was always open to visitors who received a cup of coffee no matter the time of day. The coffee was always ready, the cookie jar was always full of chocolate chip cookies and there was always a welcoming smile. In her lifetime she baked from scratch and decorated over 750 angel food cakes for family members and friends' birthdays. After Irvin died in 2006 Marian continued to live on the farm with her son Bob, who cared for her like no other could. In 2013 she moved into Bethesda Nursing Home where she received the loving care of the staff and made many new friends. She especially enjoyed playing Bingo, folding towels on Friday afternoons and attending chapel every Sunday. She also continued to enjoy her morning and afternoon coffee. She is survived by her four children, Charles (Deb) Heimes, Sioux Falls, Nancy (Mike) Means, Irvine, CA, JoAnn Heimes, Rock Springs, WY and Robert Heimes, Beresford; 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 3 step-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Wilma Johnson, LaVerne, CA and Dorothy Tramp, Yankton, SD; as well as many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Irvin, a brother Melvin, and two brothers and one sister in infancy. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM, Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at Dalesburg Lutheran Church, rural Beresford, with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Monday from 6PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
