Margaret Frances Stevens was born on March 14, 1923; in Alvord, Iowa to parents Jess and Mathilda (Jensen) VerWey of Inwood, Iowa.
Margaret attended school through 10th grade when she left school to help on the family farm. Margaret married Ken Hall and on December 4, 1945 she welcomed a daughter, Sharyl. On March 10, 1952 she married Clarence Stevens in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; they were married for 63 years. On June 2, 1952 Clarence proudly adopted Margaret's daughter, Sharyl Hall. After they were married the couple moved to Bigelow, Minnesota before returning to the Centerville – Beresford area to operate their own farm. On January 28, 1953, they proudly welcomed their only son, Roger and on July 31, 1956 they proudly welcomed twin daughters Jayne and Janyce. Margaret was baptized at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville.
Margaret and Clarence resided on the same farm northwest of Beresford for 58 years. During their married life they enjoyed square dancing with the Hurley Hoppers. They moved into the Bethesda Inn in August of 2012. Margaret moved into the nursing home in October of 2014 and Clarence died May 27, 2015. She passed away May 22, 2018 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford at the age of 95.
Margaret's life revolved around her family and she greatly enjoyed time spent with them, especially children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She worked part time at the Royal Bakery in Centerville for eight years and volunteered at the Civic Center in Beresford. Margaret bowled for many years and attended numerous state and national bowling tournaments. Margaret loved to write poetry and wrote many special poems during her free time. She spent many nights playing bingo or in a friendly game of pinochle with family and friends. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sharing her favorite recipes.
Margaret is survived by her daughter Sharyl Ochsner, Beresford; son Roger (Ruth) Stevens of Beresford; daughters Jayne (Steve) Ratzlaff of Chadron, NE and Janyce (Gary) Johnson of Canton. Seven grandchildren; Jeff (Julie) Hult, Huron; Bryan (JoAnne) Stevens, Canton; Brenda (Jason) Jensen; Beresford; Ben (Corie) Ratzlaff and Justin Ratzlaff all of Fort Collins, CO; Sarah (Kristopher) Shrewsberry, Brookings; Laura (Edwin) Frerichs of Rapid City. Thirteen great-grandchildren: Taylor and Reagan Stevens; Kayla, Leah, and Mariah Jensen; Shawn, Jocelyn, Lily, Ethan, Jayda, and Alice Ratzlaff, Theo and Bella Frerichs. She is also survived by her brother Don VerWey of Twin Falls, ID, brother-in-law Arnold (Carolyn) Stevens, Vermillion; sister-in-law Alice Richards (special friend Gary Reimers) Washburn, ND, special friend Lois Norling, Beresford; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Dick VerWey, sisters Anne Schroeder, Gertrude Johnson, Gladys DeGraaff, and Betty Mullinix; grandson Joshua Ratzlaff, and son-in-law Dennis Ochsner.
