Malcom D. "Mac" Kratochvil was born June 7, 1920 in Union County, South Dakota to parents Will J. and Fannie (French) Kratochvil. He died January 2, 2012, which was his 69th Wedding Anniversary, at Morningside Care Center in Alcester, SD at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 25 days. Mac attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Alcester High School in 1939. He married Arlene Abbey on January 2, 1943 in Dakota City, NE. Mac farmed and raised purebred Hereford cattle in rural Alcester until 1974 when the couple moved into town. He then was a district sales manager for Sokota Hybrids, retiring in 1985. Mac was a member of the United Church of Christ in Alcester. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Lions Club and served on the board of directors for Morningside Manor, Alcester State Bank, United Church of Christ and was Chairman of the Green Creek Watershed. Mac loved to hunt and fish. He practiced wildlife and soil conservation and planted many trees at his church. The couple enjoyed spending winters in Texas and Florida for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter in infancy, son-in-law Rich Janssen, great granddaughter Brooklyn Janssen, and five brothers, Lesley, Harry, Bill, Charlie, and Don. His survivors include his wife Arlene of Alcester; two daughters, Linda Peterson and husband Glendon of LeMars, IA and Lorna Paul and husband Kelly of Ashtabula, OH; four grandchildren, Amy (Pat) Smith, Des Moines, IA, Scott (Jen) Janssen, Mansfield, TX, Angie (Joe) Tingley, Berea, OH and Jesse Paul, Ashtabula, OH; 6 great grandchildren, Madison, Sam and Charlie Smith, Addie and Ben Janssen, and Lily Tingley; a sister Mary Reppe of Alcester; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the United Church of Christ in Alcester with burial to follow at Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, IA. Visitation will be Friday from 6PM to 8PM with a prayer service at 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester.
