Madonna Esther (Nordquist) Manning passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024. She was born August 4, 1933, in Huron, South Dakota, to Albert and Margaret (Reinartz) Nordquist. They moved to Beresford a year later, where her dad and uncle, Leo Reinartz, started the Beresford Auto Salvage.
She attended Beresford schools and graduated in 1951. While in high school, she worked at the Green Globe Café. After high school, she worked at the First National Bank and the Vogue Theater.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to Gerald (Mike) Manning on April 1, 1952. They were married ten days when Mike shipped out to Korea, returning in June 1953. They moved to the farm southeast of Beresford on April 1, 1956. They retired from farming and moved to town in May 1996. Mike became ill and passed away on July 6, 1996. They were marred for forty-four years.
Donna, as she was most well known as, worked at the Beresford Super 8 Motel for nine years and then at the Crossroads Motel until 2020. Donna was active member of the St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, and Rosary Society. She belonged to the Sunnyside Club, Nite & Gales, a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, and Beresford Senior Center. She volunteered to rock babies at the Bright Beginnings starting in 2004. She enjoyed making doughnuts for the residents at Bethesda. She, with Bev Wetrosky, started the annual 11th Street block picnic. Donna was also on the local county election board where she served many years. She started the St. Teresa's Cookie Fair in December 1996, which is still held annually. Donna had many hobbies she loved including playing cards, baking, and giving it all away to her friends and family. She was a woman of great faith.
Her husband Gerald, her parents, sister Betty Fitzgerald, and brothers Tom and Gene Norquist and son-in-law Roman Frigge proceeded her in death.
Her seven children survive her: John (Kathleen) Manning, Lenexa, Kansas; Margaret (Brian) Stephenson, Sioux City, Iowa: Rose Manning, Beresford; Tom (Pat) Manning, Beresford; Teresa (Rick) Gelhaus, Coon Rapids, Iowa; Dan Manning (Mark Brixen) West St. Paul, Minnesota; and Colleen (Shawn) Haugse, Lennox, South Dakota. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Jeannie Nordquist, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10AM Saturday, April 27, 2024 at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Beresford, South Dakota. Visitation will be 5-7PM Friday, April 26th at the church with a rosary at 6:45PM followed by a prayer service at 7PM.
