Lowell M. Duncan was born October 24, 1929 in Beresford, SD to parents Roy and Lucille (Hansen) Duncan. He died January 12, 2012 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester, SD at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 18 days. Lowell attended Sunny Side rural school and graduated from Beresford High School in 1947. He married Joanne Johnson in 1951. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in California during the Korean Conflict. After returning to South Dakota, Lowell farmed near Alcester and was a Pioneer Seed Corn dealer. In 1999 he suffered a massive stroke. After much therapy he was able to walk for a short time but never regained his ability to speak. The couple remained on the farm until 2006 when Lowell became a resident at Morningside Care Center where he lived until the present time. Lowell was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Alcester American Legion. His best days were spent fishing with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Donna Johnson. Survivors are his wife Joanne Duncan of Alcester; two sons, David Duncan and wife Marjory of Alcester and John Duncan and wife Rhonda of Castlewood, SD; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; a brother DeWayne Duncan and wife Glenda of Viborg, SD; two sisters, Delores Havelka of Aurora, CO and Cheryl Johnson and husband Doug of Alcester; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, January 16, 2012 at the United Church of Christ in Alcester with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation with family will be Sunday from 6PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester.
