Funeral services for Lorraine Birnie will be 2PM Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Beresford. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8PM at the church. The family requests memorials to Beresford UCC. Lorraine Amanda Birnie was born May 13, 1922 in Clay County, SD to Erick B. and Amanda (Johnson) Forstrom. She died October 12, 2013 at Bethesda of Beresford at the age of 91 years, four months and 29 days. Lorraine was raised in Beresford. She graduated from Beresford High School in 1940 and from the University of South Dakota in 1944. She taught business classes to high school students in northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota. Lorraine married Otto Birnie on June 12, 1949, and they were life long residents of Beresford. She was an employee of the Federal Land Bank for 25 years, an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of the Beresford United Church of Christ. Lorraine enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting. She liked to play card games and especially loved the time she could spend with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her generous, compassionate and caring manner will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. She is survived by her one son, Robert and wife Karel of Salix, IA; two daughters: Cheryl Poppens and husband Ronald of Lennox; and Lois Vincent and husband Charles of LaGrange, Georgia; ten grandchildren, Valerie DeBates and her husband Michael, Sara Allen and her husband Chris, Jacqueline Bates and her husband Joe, Eric Poppens and his wife Ginger, Allison Highum and her husband Bret, Julia Phelps and her husband Mike, Stephen Vincent, Kelly Vincent, Jeff Vincent, and Charles Vincent V; 14 great-grandchildren; Amanda DeBates, Joseph DeBates, KayLynn DeBates, James DeBates, Emme DeBates, Cailey Highum, Dani Highum, Eli Highum, Hunter Poppens, Faith Poppens, Reo Bates, Meaghan Bates, Hunter Vincent, and Cooper Vincent. Lorraine is also survived by her sister Marlys Sackreiter and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther Johnson, and her husband Otto.
