Babe was a lifelong member of Moe Parish, he was baptized and confirmed at Romsdal Lutheran Church. He attended school at Elmwood country school and graduated from Alcester High School in 1960. He then earned a business degree at a college in Grand Island, NE. Most of his career revolved around farming. Early in his farming career, he did custom combining following the harvest from Kansas to North Dakota.
On October 30, 1966, Babe and Sandy were married at Brule Creek Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point, SD. They lived in Alcester but the country life was where they preferred to make their home so in 1978, they purchased a farm northwest of Alcester and raised their three children David, Matthew, and Andrea.
Babe enjoyed trips to see his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in the warmer climates of Arizona, Florida, Las Vegas, and Texas. He enjoyed deer hunting, bowling, golfing, crossword puzzles, sudoku, and watching the Minnesota Twins Baseball and Nebraska Cornhuskers Football games. When he wasn't doing any of those, he was watching Westerns. His family often would have to wait on him until the episode was over even if he had seen it many times before.
Grateful to have shared his life are his wife of 56 years Sandra; sons, David (Dawn) and Matt (Carissa); daughter, Andrea Saugstad; six grandchildren, Jaclynn (Cory) Altenberg, Emily and Madilyn Saugstad, Briana Twillie (Fiancé Enrique), Brittany (Ryan) Kilfoyle and Corey Tiemann; seven great-grandchildren and the eighth arriving the end of October; two brothers, Lloyal and Paul (MaryEllen) Saugstad, and sister Kathy "Sis" Saugstad; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
