Lloyd A. W. Johnson was born April 22, 1918 in La Porte, Indiana to Harvey and Anna Adele (Johnson) Johnson. He died September 11, 2013 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester at the age of 95 years, four months and 19 days. Lloyd's father passed away before he was one year old. A few years later he and his mother came to South Dakota where she worked as a housekeeper for Andrew Anderson. They were married and had three children giving Lloyd two half-brothers and a half-sister. He was eight years old when his mother died; Lloyd went to live with his aunt and uncle, Earl and Ellen Leafstedt and stayed there until graduating from Alcester High School in 1936. Lloyd was in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years before becoming a farm worker for Ed and Joyce Fischer. It was where he met his future wife, Olive Doty, a sister to Joyce Fischer. They were married December 23, 1940 and went to farm with her parents. They purchased the Doty farm and continued to farm and raise their family there. He and Olive retired from farming and moved into Alcester in 1988. Lloyd had a lawn service until 2004. He enjoyed bowling, was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and a member of the Alcester UCC where he served on various boards and was treasurer for several years. Lloyd is a 72 year member of the Alcester Masonic Lodge #115, where he served as master in 1946, and most recently at Jeptha Lodge #121 in Hudson. He also served on the board for Pleasant Hill Cemetery and was treasurer of Cole Rural School for many years. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Olive; four daughters, Adele Buum of Brookings, SD, Judy (David) Kiewel of Worthing, SD, Paulette (Ben) Ihm of Liberty, NY and Rebecca (Jody) Frye of North Sioux City, SD; one son, Vaughn (Jody) of Alcester, SD, 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; and cousins, Lawrence "Sam" (Evelyn) Leafstedt of Alcester and June (Dwight) Wilson of MO. His parents, stepfather, two infant sons, son-in-law, Owen Buum, two half-brothers, half-sister and cousins, Herb Johnson and Mary Jane Hart, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 10AM Sat., Sept. 14th at Alcester United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 5-8PM Friday at the church with a prayer service at 7PM.
