Leona Sandvall, 96, of Beresford , SD died Monday, March 11, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls . Funeral services will be 10AM Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Leona was born January 10, 1917 in Beresford to Hans and Ella Marie (Engstrom) Johnson. She was raised on the family farm in the Beresford area and graduated from Beresford High School in 1935. In her early years, Leona was employed in Lake Forest . IL; did housework in Vermillion and Beresford and worked in California with her aunt and uncle where her wages ranged from $1.75-4.00 per week. In 1936 she entered a subscription campaign selling the Beresford Republic for $2.00 per year and won the first place prize, a 1936 Chevrolet. The most important thing in Leona's life was when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Leona was a member of Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church. Leona married Kenneth A. Sandvall October 5, 1938 at her grandparent's home in Beresford. They lived in Alcester, Canton and Sioux Falls prior to moving to Illinois where they raised their two children while living in Wilmington, Joliet and Plainfield. Leona taught ceramics classes in her home. She and Kenneth retired and moved to Venice, Florida then later returned to Beresford. Kenneth died in February 2004. Survivors include her daughter Pamela (Jim) Pickering of Cedar Lake, IN; her son Dale (Donna) Sandvall of Arlington, TX; nine grandchildren, David, Mark, Matthew, Brittany, Bryce, Brinkley, Brooklyn, Barcleigh and Breck; five great-grandchildren and sister, Vera Voog of Beresford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth A. Sandvall, one sister, Emma Larsen and one brother, Robert Johnson.
