Leda Manning was born April 4, 1916 to parents John and Mary (Gard) Shanker. She died January 13, 2008 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 91 years. Leda attended Cleveland rural school and graduated from Beresford High School. She married Daniel Manning on October 12, 1936 at Emmett. The couple farmed in the Garryowen community, retiring to Beresford in 1974. Leda was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for 64 years and was the Catholic Daughter Mother of the Year, Beresford Chapter, in 1994. She spent many hours at her sewing machine and enjoyed quilting with her friends. She also loved cooking, baking, and canning all the produce they raised in their garden. She was preceded in death by her husband Dan, parents, sister Venice, and brothers Edward and Donald. Her survivors include five daughters: Phyllis Brommer and husband Bernard of Oakdale, MN, Arlene Olson of Sioux Falls, SD, Beverly Kramer and husband John of Eastman, WI, Sharyl Kessler and husband Richard of Prescott Valley, AZ, and Jan Schochenmaier and husband Ross of Aberdeen, SD; three sons: Jim Manning of Burbank, SD, Edward Manning and wife Dinah of Omaha, NE, and Richard Manning of San Francisco, CA; 18 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A funeral mass will be held at 11AM, Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Beresford, SD, with burial at Garryowen Cemetery, rural Burbank, SD. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2PM to 5PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford and resuming at 6:30PM at St. Teresa Catholic Church with a wake service at 7PM.
