Obituary

Services for Ken Harms were held February 17 at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church, rural Beresford with burial at the church cemetery. Kenneth R. Harms was born February 1, 1932 near Chancellor, SD to parents Herman and Olive (Rector) Harms. He died February 13, 2006 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 74 years. Ken attended rural school near Chancellor. He entered the United States Air Force in 1951 and served as a mechanical engineer until his honorable discharge in 1955. Ken married Lily Tiemann on April 30, 1956 in Luverne, MN. The couple made their home in the Sioux Falls and Beresford areas. Ken started working for the South Dakota Rehabilitation Department for the Blind in 1970 and was employed there until his retirement. He then held various part time jobs. Ken attended Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church and was a 51-year member of the Chancellor American Legion. He liked tinkering on cars and tractors and anything with an engine. He developed a love of airplanes and flying during his time in the Air Force and continued to enjoy them throughout his life. He at one time had an ultra light airplane he flew. Ken also enjoyed playing pool and had participated in many pool tournaments. He was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter Bethany, 2 sisters and 2 siblings in infancy. Survivors include his wife Lily Harms of Beresford; two sons: Herm Harms and wife Kristi of Mitchell, SD and Rod Harms and wife Jane of Tea; three daughters: Deb Truman and husband Jim of Beresford, Wendy Austin and husband Alan of Beresford and Kim Baney and husband Dave of Beresford; 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; three brothers: Raymond Harms and wife Joretta of Lennox, Leonard Harms of Parker and Earl Harms and wife Linda of Stroudsberg, PA; sister Lorene DeNeui of Chancellor; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
