The second child of Andrew Anderson and Edyth (Webber) Anderson, Katherine Marie was born December 8, 1919 at home in Beresford, SD. She attended grade school in Beresford and Silver Lake country school, graduating from Beresford High School in 1937. Her education at a business college in Sioux City was interrupted when a job became available as telephone operator for the city of Beresford. This gave her the opportunity to assist her family financially, and so she returned to Beresford. It was at a dance that she met Leonard Larson of Spink, SD. They danced their way through their courtship and were married June 12, 1941. Looking for better job opportunities, the couple moved to Chicago, IL. Two children were born to Len and Kathy during their time in Chicago, a daughter, Gail Marie and son, Stephen Craig. But the small community of Spink called to them in 1946 with the chance to purchase the Spink Store. Both of them worked hard building up this general store and living in an apartment above the business. And even though Len continued to operate the Spink Store until his death in 1981, the family moved to Beresford in 1951. A few years after this move they built their home, a home which Kathy lovingly decorated as she painted, stained woodwork and sewed draperies. Len jokingly told her once that if she was ever arrested she would surely paint her cell and hang curtains. And it was in this home that her gift of hospitality shone brightly. There were long visits from family members, neighborhood gatherings, and coffee parties. All were welcome in her home and at her table. Kathy especially enjoyed looking around the table and seeing her grandchildren enjoying a wonderful Sunday dinner or a meal for a holiday or special occasion. Her love was expressed in sharing with others in so many ways. Kathy's career at Bethesda Nursing Home began in 1966 when the administrator met her on the sidewalk downtown and asked her if she would like a job. She responded that she didn't know how to do bookkeeping, and he said "Well, you can learn can't you?" And learn she did - not only how to keep the books, but also the ins and outs of the nursing home industry. She learned so well that on two occasions the board of directors asked her to manage the facility between administrators. Her love for Bethesda and the residents played a major role in her life for 22 years. And it was the place that provided loving care for her at the end of her life. Katherine died on April 30, 2015 at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Lewis, Lloyd and Lyman and two sisters, Mary and June. Remaining to celebrate her life are her children, Gail (Sheridan) Swee of Beresford and Steve (Carol) Larson, Bloomington, MN: grandchildren, Heidi Swee Olson, Kelly Swee, Angela Larson Anderson, Scott Jamie Swee, David Larson, and Kerri Swee Tietgen; twelve great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill (Marlys) Anderson of Sioux Falls. Memorial services will be 3PM Friday, May 8, 2015 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Memorials may be directed to Bethesda of Beresford, 606 W Cedar, Beresford, SD 57004.
