Juna Maurine Ovella Voog was born on her family's farm near Centerville, SD on November 9, 1928, the youngest of 12 children. She died as she lived, peacefully and quietly, on June 8th at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls surrounded by her family. Juna attended Centerville Public Schools before entering the teacher education program at the University of Sioux Falls. For two years she taught children in all eight grades at Brooklyn School in rural Beresford. One day after school she clutched the door handle ready to leave when she discovered that at the same time a hand was turning the knob on the other side of the door. It was Oliver Carlson, a veteran of WWII from Beresford. The couple was married on an icy evening January 24, 1950. They farmed together near Beresford, where they raised their three children. During these years Juna was an active member at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church and with the Tuesday Sue's Extension Club. In 2005 they moved to Beresford where they lived until early this spring when fragile health required Juna to enter Bethesda of Beresford. Juna loved her family. Her home was always open to her children and grandchildren who looked forward to weekly Sunday dinners around the table. Jesus was the center of her life. With her quiet and prayerful spirit, she reflected a powerful example of faithfulness to all who knew her. She gifted each of her children and grandchildren with a Bible verse she found especially fitting. Grandma Juna had a big, beautiful, yet unhealthy heart. She is survived by her husband, Oliver Carlson; her children, Linda (Gary) Bovill, Lee (Jane) Carlson and LaVern (Lorry) Carlson; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one sister, Marcella. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martina and Axel Voog; 10 siblings, one grandson, Timothy David, and three great-grandchildren, Aaron Oliver, Isaiah Joel and Ianna Grace. Funeral services will be 2PM Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church, rural Beresford. Visitation will be 2-8PM Tuesday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 6-8PM.
