Funeral services for Joy Meier, age 96, of Centerville, SD will be 10AM Monday, August 24, 2009 at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Visitation will be Sunday from 3-8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 7-8PM.

Joy Meier was born July 7, 1913 in Inwood, Iowa to Oscar and Ruth (Miller) Erickson. She died August 21, 2009 in Viborg, South Dakota at the age of 96 years, one month and 14 days.

Joy graduated from high school and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught country school in Iowa for five years. Joy was married to Leonard Hegge June 15, 1936 in Sioux Falls. They lived in various communities and settled in Centerville. Joy worked in Sioux Falls at Sioux Valley Hospital and Lewis Drug before starting at Wilsons Market in Centerville. Leonard died in 1970.

In March 1975 she married Willis Meier at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Farmersburg and Postville, Iowa. Joy was very proud of her heritage and in 1984 went to Norway to visit her extended family. Following Willis death in 1993, Joy returned to Centerville.

She is survived by her two daughters, Dona (Lyle) Christensen of Lennox, SD and Bonnie (Lanney) Nelson of Centerville, SD; four grandchildren, Jeff Christensen, Jay Christensen, Julie (Ric) Morren and Wendy (Travis) Wiese; five great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jaylen Morren, Shalee and Chelsey Rist and Leah Wiese.

Her parents, Oscar and Ruth Erickson; sister, Eleanor VanSteenwyk; and husbands, Leonard Hegge and Willis Meier preceded her in death.
