John "Sunny" Leonard Stuntebeck, Jr. was born November, 28, 1939 to John and Alma (Nichols) Stuntebeck, Sr. Surrounded by his family, John went home to his Savior after a short battle with cancer on October 28, 2011. John was raised in the Catholic faith and attended Wakonda public school. He married Karen Jo Larsen, the love of his life, on August 13, 1957. They lived in Centerville most of their lives where they raised two daughters, Laurie Sue and Dawn Sussanne. The couple lived in Parker from 1979 to 1984 then they returned to Centerville. They were members of Scandia Lutheran Church. John worked as a meat cutter Pete's Locker Service in Centerville. He enjoyed being an emergency responder for the community. He served as the Chief of Police in Centerville, Deputy Sheriff of Turner County and worked as a part time police officer in many surrounding communities. John was an EMT for the Centerville Ambulance and served on the Centerville and Parker Fire Departments. John was a coast-to-coast truck driver for many years for Apple Truck Lines, Willers Trucking Service, Jim Palmer Trucking and Blachowske Truck Line. He received various safe driving awards and was a member of the million mile club. Horses were a large part of John's life. He enjoyed riding and breaking horses. He was a farrier and was a member and president of the Centerville Saddle Club for a lot of years. The most important part of John's life was his wife and family. He loved camping, fishing and hunting. He was very proud of all of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Grateful for having shared his life are his two daughters, Laurie (Chuck) Skotvold of Centerville, SD and Dawn (Corwin) Duerksen of Parker, SD; grandchildren, Jamie (Naomi) Martz of Centerville, SD, Justin Martz of Centerville, SD, Josh (Alyssa) Martz of Sioux Falls, SD, Luke Martz of Sioux Falls, SD, Brandi (Mike and Jaden Olson) Duerksen of Colman, SD, and Cody (Vanessa Johanssen) Duerksen of Parker, SD; great-grandchildren, Tyrell and Tucker Martz of Centerville, SD and Addison Martz of Sioux Falls, SD. Also surviving is John's twin sister, Jo (Jerry) Wallace of Kimball, SD; two brothers-in-law, Wallace (Gladys) Larsen of Pierre, SD and Dorwin (Louise) Larsen of Flat Rock, NC; sister-in-law, Jeannette Larsen of Sioux Falls, SD; life long friends Ken and JoAnn Knutson and family of Beresford, SD; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; parents, John Sr. and Alma Stuntebeck; uncle Jim and aunt Hilda Skluzak; great-grandson, Treyton Martz; father and mother-in-law, Peder and Iva Larsen; niece, Linda Larsen and brother-in-law, Arvin Larsen. Funeral services will be held 10:00AM Monday, October 31, 2011 at Scandia Lutheran Church, Centerville with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery, rural Centerville. Visitation with family present will be Sunday from 4PM to 6PM at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville.
