Obituary

Funeral services for Joe Monson will be Thursday, Jan. 31st at 10:00 a.m. at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Joe Monson was born January 1, 1909 in Centerville, South Dakota to Henry and Lena (Hill) Monson. He went to be with the Lord January 26, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville at the age of 99 years and 25 days surrounded by his family. Joe grew up in the Centerville area. On January 15, 1938 he was married to Ethel White. Following their marriage they lived on a farm northeast of Centerville where their three daughters were born. In 1948 they moved to a farm northeast of Centerville that would be their home for the next 32 years. They retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Lennox, SD. After 60 years of marriage, Ethel passed away on July 23, 1998. Joe lived in Lennox until 2004 when he moved to an apartment in Centerville. In April of 2005 he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville. Joe was baptized at Scandia Lutheran Church on January 24, 1909. He was a member of Scandia at the time of his death. He was a past council member of Scandia. Joe enjoyed life to the fullest. Farming, growing flowers, playing cards, fishing, attending auctions, visiting family and friends, traveling and playing bingo were just a few of the activities he enjoyed the most. Joe was also a true Centerville Tornados fan. His children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends were a very special part of his life. Along with his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, four sisters and one brother. Grateful for having shared his life are his three daughters and their husbands, Joyce and DeWane Carls of Hartford, SD, Jean and Don Smith of Centerville, SD and Roberta Bert and Roger Carls of Hartford, SD; six grandchildren and spouses, Mary Jo and Travis Graves, Darlene and Tim Kueter, Lisa and Jack ONeill, Jason and Aimee Carls, Stacy and Steve VanWesten and Kimberly and Russel Brick; six great-grandchildren, Chase and Nolan Carls, Ethan and Hayden Kueter, and Taylor and Jack ONeill; one brother, John Monson and his wife, Evelyn and one sister-in-law, Edith Ulberg all of Lennox, SD; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
