Joanne Marie Duncan was born December 6, 1931 near Centerville, SD to parents Oscar and Mary Ann (Donahue) Johnson. She died June 25, 2013 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester, SD at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 19 days. Joanne graduated from Centerville High School in 1949. She taught rural school for two years and then married Lowell Duncan of Beresford. They moved to Oceanside, CA while Lowell served in the US Marine Corps. They returned to South Dakota and began farming near Alcester. Lowell died in 2012 and Joanne moved into Alcester where she has lived until the present time. Joanne was a member of the B.C.& U. Club and the Alcester American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to read and worked for many years at the Alcester Library. She enjoyed baking and made many pies, cakes, cookies and breads. Joanne's greatest love in life was spending time with her family. She was a devoted and caring wife, mother and grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John and Ardell, and two sisters, Berenice and LuVern. She is survived by her two sons David Duncan and his wife Marjory of Alcester and John Duncan and wife Rhonda of Sioux Falls; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Alcester United Church of Christ with burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Friday from 6PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester.
