Joan Bernice (Oines) Hurd, 99, of Beresford, S.D. passed away July 18, 2024 at the Bethesda of Beresford. She was born on August 5, 1924 in Kingsbury County near Arlington, S.D. to parents Alfred and Inga (Kittleson) Oines, the fourth of six children. They lived near Dempster, S.D. and in Washington state before settling on the family farm near Bruce, S.D.

Joan was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant and confirmed in the St. Petri's Lutheran Church near Bruce. She met her future husband, Roy L. Hurd, and after his discharge from the army, they were united in marriage on March 21, 1947 in Estelline, S.D. Shortly thereafter, Joan became a member of the Congregational Church in Estelline. They were blessed with three children, Ricky, Robert and Kathleen and in 1957, the young family moved to Beresford. Joan worked in the Beresford school kitchen for 32 years, retiring in 1995. Some past students still remember the buns that she often baked there in the early mornings.

Joan was a woman of deep faith, prayer and integrity. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was active in the United Church of Christ women's fellowship. She was a devoted wife and mother, and had unwavering love for family and friends. She served over the years as Sunday school teacher, boy scout/girl scout leader and she delivered meals on wheels into her 90's. She was an adopted mother/grandmother to many neighborhood children throughout the years. She also enjoyed her flower gardens, feeding the birds and making lefse each Thanksgiving and Christmas, to the delight of her family.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; Roy Hurd, her husband of 66 years; grandson Andrew Hurd; brothers George Oines and Ray Oines; and sisters Mildred Pottraz and Alleen Buehner.

She is survived by sons Rick (Vickie) Hurd, Owatonna, MN and Rob (Jane) Hurd, Boise, ID; daughter Kathy (Bob) Prieve, Spooner, WI; granddaughters Marie Hurd and Erica Hurd (Chris Youngberg); great granddaughters Olivia Youngberg and Julia Youngberg; brother Alan (Bonnie) Oines and many beloved nieces and nephews.
