Funeral services for James Shum will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford, SD. Burial with military honors will follow at Beresford City Cemetery.

James A. Shum was born October 26, 1948 in Sioux Falls, SD to Everett and Eather (Merrigan) Shum. He died May 11, 2009 at Southridge Health Care Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 60. James was raised and educated in Beresford. He served for four years in the US Navy during the Viet Nam Era.

Following his honorable discharge, he returned to South Dakota and worked at Golden Sun Feed Mill in Sioux Falls. James enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson. In recent years he was retired and living in Sioux Falls when he was stricken with colon cancer. He will be greatly missed by those who enjoyed his friendly smile and his good sense of humor. James was genuinely interested in all his family and was a proud father who loved his kids.

Survivors include his three children, Andrea (Neil) Snyders of Larchwood, IA, Robert (Emily) Shum of Lincoln, NE and Stephanie (Levi) Chiodi of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Geena and Brooke Snyders and Nathan Chiodi; three sisters, Barbara (James) Uhe of Sioux Falls, Mary (Wayne) Wiley of Lincoln, NE and Diane (James) Kroll of Des Moines, IA. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and many friends.

His parents, Everett and Esther; and step-father, Archie Norling preceded him in death.
