Obituary

With his family by his side, James G. Harmon passed away in his home on February 2, 2015 at the age of 79 after a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Bonnie and their children; Barb, David, Pam, Brenda and Laci. Jim was born on December 20, 1935 in Centerville, SD, to father Bert and mother Augusta (Peterson) Harmon. He grew up in a large, loving family with four sisters and four brothers. Jim attended Joy Country School and graduated from Centerville High School. In 1959, he was drafted and proudly served in the US Army during the Berlin Crisis in Germany. Following his service, Jim worked for the State of South Dakota Highway Department on road construction. On November 6th, 1964 Jim married Bonnie Georgeson. While living in Colorado Jim worked for LG Everest and he and Bonnie welcomed their first child, Barbara, before moving back to South Dakota. In 1968, Jim and his brother Duane started Harmon Sand and Gravel and operated until 1986. He then went back to work for LG Everest on the D&I Railroad until reaching his retirement. Jim was a member of the American Legion and served as a member and the Chief of the Centerville Fire Department. A devoted family man, Jim loved watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild grow. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially fishing with family and friends. His contagious smile and witty personality is what made him loved by many. Jim is survived by his wife, Bonnie, children; Barb (Brad) Austin, David (Jamie) Harmon, Pam (Dooley) Shroyer, Brenda Stewart, Laci Harmon (Jake Lanning), grandchildren; Ashley, Briana (Mike), Logan, Ciara, Ian, Lane, Luke, Aidan and one expected in August, great-grandchild; Jaela, and siblings, Eva Erickson and Tom Harmon and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Augusta, siblings; Duane, Luverne, Earl, May, Floyd and Lula. Funeral services will be held 10:30 Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Centerville United Church of Christ with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6PM to 8PM at the church with a prayer service at 7PM. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, MEMORIALS MAY BE DIRECTED TO THE CENTERVILLE AMERICAN LEGION.
