James Carlson

James V. “Jim” Carlson was born August 13, 1943 in Viborg, South Dakota to Arthur B. and Cora (Ven) Carlson. He passed away March 17, 2026 in Viborg at the age of 82 years.

Jim was baptized and confirmed at Skrefsrud Lutheran Church and has been a member of Scandia Lutheran Church for 60 years. He attended Millbrook #47 grade school and graduated from Centerville High School with the class of 1961. He served six years with the SD Air National Guard.

Jim started farming with his father and later with his brother, Ronnie. He raised corn, soybeans and alfalfa. His favorite part of farming was his cow/calf operation.

He married Glenda Rist on November 27, 1965. They were blessed with three children, Laura, Tricia and Aaron. Jim was a member of the American Legion Frank Holmcombe Post 43, served on the church council, the township board, and the Farmers Elevator Board, where he worked for 10 years.

In retirement he loved to help Jason Johnke with field work and during harvest time. Jim enjoyed coffee time at Merle Nelson’s. He and Glenda spent winters in Texas enjoying the weather, good friends and shuffleboard.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Arthur B. Carlson, Jr. and George Carlson; and sisters, Annabelle Andal, Ruby Knutson and Lois Leslie.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Glenda; son, Aaron (Leanne) Carlson; daughters, Laura (Pat) Morris and Tricia Prince; his grandchildren, Jacob (Lindsey) Morris, Colton (Kailee) Prince, Caleb Prince, Caden Prince, Rachel Morris, Isabella Carlson and Chloe Carlson. Jim is also survived by his brother, Ron (Ann) Carlson; brother-in-law, Randy Rist; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 10AM Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Scandia Lutheran Church, 251 Broadway Street, Centerville. Visitation will be 5-7PM Friday in the church fellowship hall with a 7PM prayer service.
