Jackson Arthur Barker was born May 24, 1935 in Hayti, South Dakota to Hugh and Ila (Williams) Barker. He died January 12, 2025 in Yankton, SD at the age of 89 years.
Jack was raised on a farm near Hayti and graduated from Hayti High School. He loved playing all sports and attended college on scholarship before joining the US Army. Jack was stationed in Germany. Following his honorable discharge he returned to South Dakota. Jack married and from this union five children were born, Mark, Marlon, Jackie, Judy and Terri.
He married Verna Carlson on October 18, 1986. They made their home on an acreage near Centerville. He was an over the road truck driver for his entire career. Jack drove coast to coast many times working with DIZCO.
Jack was proud of his horse and competed him many times. After he retired from driving, Jack helped a neighbor farming.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Danny and Thomas; and two sisters, Mary and Jeanne.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Verna; his five children and three step-children, Carla, Ronald Jr. and Shawn; many grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and his brother, Mike.
Memorial services will be 1PM Friday, January 17, 2025 at Wass Funeral Chapel in Centerville, 400 Wisconsin Street Centerville, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel.
