Irene Losing was born on February 18, 1928 to Konrad and Paulina Stoebner Losing. She was the seventh of eight children in the family. Irene grew up on farms in the Tripp, Tyndall and Avon areas and attended a rural school. She was confirmed at the Reformed Church in Tripp. Irene married Winfred Edward Walz on February 25, 1945 at Scotland in her minister's home. They farmed in the Freeman and Tripp areas. After retiring from farming, they moved to Freeman. Irene worked as an apartment manger for Skogen Company and cleaned the Rural Medical Clinic in Freeman. But her favorite job was in the cafeteria at the Freeman Elementary School. Irene was an excellent homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking, cleaning, gardening, and singing. Winfred died in 1998 after fifty three years of marriage. She remained in Freeman until September 2009. Irene then moved into Betheseda of Beresford nursing home. She died Friday, September 16, 2011 at Sanford Hospital at the age of 83 years, six months and 28 days. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Freeman. Grateful for sharing Irene's life are her daughters, Carol (Gene) Thormodsgaard of Beresford and Brenda (Jeffrey) Resnick of Foster City, CA; three grandsons, Tyson (Jenni) Thormodsgaard of Council Bluffs, IA, Trent Thormodsgaard of Beresford and Adam Resnick of Berkeley, CA; two great-grandchildren, Collin and Annika Thormodsgaard of Council Bluffs, IA; one brother, Harry (Hertha) Losing of Yankton; one sister, Darlene Nellis of Lead,SD; one brother-in-law, Ray Walz of Archbold, OH and one sister-in-law, Beverly Walz of Springdale, AR. We will remember Irene's physical and emotional strength, devotion to family and sense of humor. The family will be present to greet friends one hour prior to the service. Funeral services will begin at 11AM Friday, September 23, 2011 at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with burial immediately following at Beresford City Cemetery.
