Obituary

Ina O. Peterson was born October 15, 1914 in Lewiston, Montana to parents Anna (Carter) and Knud B. Solberg and entered into death on August 18, 2011 at the Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg, SD at the age of 96 years, 10 months and 3 days. At an early age, Ina's family moved from Montana to the Freeman family farm. She attended high school at Augustana Academy in Canton, SD until her father's death. At that time, she returned to Freeman to finish her high school education, graduating in 1933. While in high school she assisted her mother with the farming and raising her brothers and sisters. She received her Nursing Degree in 1937 from Sioux Valley Hospital and worked in surgery assisting Dr. G. E VanDemark in over 500 surgeries in 3 years. On August 31, 1940 she married Howard C Peterson in Sioux Falls, SD. They made their home in the Centerville area where they raised their 2 children. Ina worked side by side with Howard on the farm. She also worked part time for Dr. Iverson, a dentist in Beresford for many years until his retirement. She then went to work at the Centerville Good Samaritan Home from 1967 to 1978 with the last 5 years as the Director of Nursing. She loved the residents, staff and friends at the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville, where she also spent her last 3 years in Assisted Living there. Ina was a member of Scandia Lutheran Church and was a past Sunday School teacher and Bible study leader. She spent many hours with her quilting circle making hundreds of quilts and layettes. She was a member of the Centerville Garden Club and loved her flowers and birds. She also had been a member of the Centerville Library Board. She was a great teacher of lefse making and passed this skill to her granddaughter and great granddaughters. She loved to knit and created countless afghans and shawls for family and friends. Ina will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who took the time to share her Norwegian heritage. She was always called upon to say the Meal Prayer in Norwegian before all family meals. She loved being with her family and encouraging them with positive words and attitude that she lived by. Ina is survived by her son Paul and wife Jean of Centerville, SD; her daughter Marlys Sutten of Aberdeen, SD; her brothers Kris Solberg and wife Opal of Ellensburg, WA and Knud Solberg of Freeman, SD; 5 grandchildren, Lee (Shannon) Peterson, Sioux Falls; Lynn (Shelly) Peterson, Yankton, SD; Carrie (Terry) Pederson, Sioux Falls, SD; Eric Peterson, Denver CO and Chad (Erin) Sutten of Aberdeen, SD; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ina was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; son-in-law Ryan Sutten; 2 sisters, Dagny Jacobsen and Kaya Solberg and sister-in-law Edna Solberg and brother-in-law Don Jacobsen. Funeral services will be 10:30AM, Monday, August 22, 2011 at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery, rural Centerville.
