Obituary

Ida Janette Cooper was born October 28, 1910 in rural Union County near Alcester, SD to parents Willie A. and Anna (Behnke) Finch. She died August 20, 2011 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester at the age of 100 years, 9 months and 22 days. Ida grew up on a farm east of Alcester and attended Miller Country School. As a child, Ida attended the Presbyterian Country Church near their home. When she was ten years old, she became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Hawarden, IA. When the Presbyterian Church in Hawarden burned down, the Congregational Church invited the members to join them. The two church congregations became the Associated Church. Ida was a member of this church until 1982, when she became a member of the United Church of Christ in Alcester where she belonged to the Women's Fellowship. Ida married Charles Cooper on August 28, 1932 in Elk Point, SD. They farmed in the Alcester area until 1981 when they moved to Alcester. Charles died February 1, 1989. Ida was a member of the Extension Club for 60 years. She was always involved in her family's school activities, 4-H projects and church. She was a church school teacher in the Associated Church for many years. As her family grew older, Ida had time to polish rocks and make jewelry. She also knit afghans and sweaters for her family and had knit many caps for the children at the Goodwill Christmas party. She became very creative in doing Hardanger needlework and also spent time teaching others this skill. She also made paraments for the Associated Church and for the United Church of Christ in Alcester. Her family and friends cherish this needlework that was made for them by Ida. Among those who survive are three daughters, Ardyce McCormack and husband Sam of Sutherland, IA, Karen Waterman and husband Keith of Davenport, IA, and Clione Burnham and husband Bill of Paradise Valley, AZ; her son Charles Cooper and wife Claudia of Gordon, TX; 12 grandchildren, Lynnette Graesing, Brian McCormack, Kirk Waterman, Kathy Garmon, Kyle Waterman, Laticia Kaiser, Stephanie Suess, Devin Burnham, Ira Cooper, Mary Ellen Johnson, Katie Cooper and Micah Cooper; thirty one great grandchildren, Clara Graesing, Jud Graesing, Matthew Stanzel, Paul Stanzel, Patrick Stanzel, Jared Stanzel, Jesse McCormack, Ethan McCormack, Callie McCormack, Johannna McCormack,Michaela Kim, Miles Kim, Ryan Waterman, Justin Waterman, Claire Waterman, Katie Rosales, Kevin Garmon, Adam Kaiser, Austin Kaiser, Andrew Kaiser, Abby Suess, Alec Suess, Jaden Suess, Samantha Meyer, Jonathan Akins, Justin Akins, Jake Akins, Ansel Johnson, Kade Johnson, Portia Cooper, and Travis Cooper; eight great, great grandchildren, Logan Thiesen, Ellie Thiesen, Jacob Abel, Landon Graesing, Keaton Stanzel, Korbin Stanzel, Isabella Rosales, and Kristy Rosales. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandchildren, Patricia Marie McCormack and Kevin Charles Waterman one great granddaughter, Attalie Gabrielle Cooper four brothers, Julius, Ray, Ralph, and Harvey, and three sisters, Ester Carpenter, Dora March and Florence Larson. A committal service will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 24 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Alcester. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00AM at the United Church of Christ in Alcester. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM with family present from 5 PM to 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland, Morningside Care Center of Alcester or United Church of Christ.
