On September 26, 1961 he married Carol Ann Heiter and they had four children, Terry, Kim, Cara and Beth. Herb shared his love of hunting and fishing, grilling and baking bread, campfire cooking and camping with his family. He enjoyed gardening, canning, picking berries and putting up jelly. His pride and joy were his children and grandchildren and he liked teaching his grandchildren to fish.
Herb grew up on farms near Carthage, SD and Silverton, OR where he learned to appreciate hard work and love the outdoors. After his service in the Army, Herb farmed around Carthage, Iroquois and Huron for many years. He also worked for Raven Industry for 40 years as a mechanic. Herb liked to go to flea markets and auctions and to travel, exploring new places. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories about his experiences. Herb liked to read cookbooks and westerns; he was a cowboy at heart.
Herb served in the Army National Guard in Howard, SD from 1957- 1963. His basic training was in Ft. Leonardwood, MO and he was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK during the Berlin Wall Crisis. He was proud that three of his children and two sons-in-law served in the Air Force, as well as a grandson in the Army and a grandson in the Air Force, both currently serving.
He is survived by his wife, Carol of Centerville; son, Terry (Teddy) Starzl of Everett, WA; daughters, Kim (Mike) Teschendorf of San Antonio, TX, Cara (Ray) Long of Layton, UT and Beth Starzl of Wakonda, SD; 11 grandchildren, Christina, Joe, TJ, Monika, Drew, Caray, Simone, Sean, Rudy, Levi and James; four great-grandchildren, Vivian, Jax, Trey and Zion. Also surviving are his two sisters, Rita (Gaylord) Lundberg of Huron, SD and Lozetta (Tom) Doll of Lylye, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Joe, Eugene, Wencl and Francis; and three sisters, Helen, Mildred and Lavina.
