Obituary

Funeral services for Herb Begeman will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14th at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:00 p.m. Herbert Curtis Begeman was born June 22, 1929 in Parker, SD to Edward F. Sr. and Tena (Buse) Begeman on a farm west of Parker, SD. He died December 9, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville after a one year battle with sarcoma at the age of 78 years, five months and 17 days. Herb graduated from Parker High School in 1947. He entered the US Army in 1952 and proudly served during the Korean War in the infantry. He was chosen to serve on the General Van Fleets Honor Guard. He returned to South Dakota following his honorable discharge. December 27, 1951 he married Mariam L. Hansen of Centerville. They made their home in Centerville for nearly 56 years. Herb began his automobile career with Hansen Motor Company in Centerville. He owned and operated Begeman Ford Sales until 1979. Herb also owned and operated Begeman Transport from 1979 until his retirement. He and Mariam enjoyed 20 winters at their home in Cathedral City, CA. He was active in various civic and volunteer organizations. Herb was a past member of the City Council, Chamber, Volunteer Fire Department, and Rotary Club in Centerville, the Irene Golf Club and the Elks in Yankton. He was a life member and past commander of the Frank Holcomb American Legion Post #73, Scandia Lutheran Church and the Parker Masonic Lodge. Herb was a 32 Degree Mason with membership at Yankton Oriental Consistory and El Riad Shrine. Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 55 years, Mariam; son, Terry Begeman and his wife, Valerie of Rapid City, SD; daughter, Cynthia Cindy Blanc and her husband, Max of Oakland, NE; five grandchildren, Corey Begeman and his fiance, Kristen Eybel of Omaha, NE, KaCey (Begeman) Struckman of Sioux Falls, Lance, Cole and Luke Blanc all of Oakland, NE; one great-granddaughter, Bailee Lin Struckman of Sioux Falls; brother Sam Begeman and his wife, Betty of Parker, SD; sister, Carolyn Carrie Jackson of CA and several nieces and nephews. His parents, sister, Henrietta and brother, Edward preceded him in death. The family requests memorials are directed to the Scandia Lutheran Church Building Fund or to Asera Hospice caregivers.
