Helene Marie (Brennan) Weverstad, 94, died on Friday, June 12, 2009, at West Hills Village Health Care facility in Rapid City, SD.
Helene Weverstad was born June 15, 1914 near Elk Point, SD, the daughter of Thomas and Alma (Payne) Brennan.
At an early age, she moved with her parents to a farm near Yankton, SD, where she attended Gunderson country school and Yankton High School.
She married Waldemar Walt Weverstad on May 29, 1937. They purchased the Centerville Journal on January 1, 1941, and sold the weekly in 1977 after 36 years of ownership. The Weverstads owned and operated the Broadway Theater in Centerville for 15 years and the Orpheum Theater in Rock Valley, IA, for 17 years.
Helene worked at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg, SD and was employed by Turner County Health Care for several years. Helene enjoyed sewing and appliqud beautiful quilts, which are now cherished by her family. Helene had made her home in Rapid City, SD since 1993.
Helene was a member of Ismah Temple #119, Daughters of the Nile in Deadwood, SD, and Ivy Chapter # 25 Order of the Easter Star in Centerville, SD.
She is survived by her son, Terry Weverstad and his wife Sheree Dee (Paulson) Weverstad of Parker, CO, her daughter, Judy (Weverstad) Evans and her husband Wallace Evans of Rapid City, SD, her sister, Mrs. Gertrude Nelson of Mission Hill, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the United Church of Christ in Centerville, SD with Reverend Jay Mitchell officiating, visitation will be one hour prior. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Centerville.
