Obituary

Helen Marie Hustrulid Peterson Larsen, 71, of Beresford, SD entered into death on Monday, August 14, 2006 at the Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford after a courageous 10 year battle with breast and stomach cancer. Helen was a life long resident of Beresford. She was born on the family farm in Union County on November 27, 1934, the daughter of Bert and Ruth (Albin) Hustrulid. She attended Gothland Country School and graduated from Beresford High School in 1952. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was a life long member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Beresford Ladies Auxiliary. After high school graduation she worked at First National Bank in Beresford until 1955. She married Burdette C. Peterson on June 16, 1954. Helen and her mother-in-law, Mabel Peterson owned and operated a diner in Beresford in 1955 and 1956. Helen then decided to stay home and raise her family and help Burdette run Peterson Recreation. In March, 1972 Helen and Burdette built and operated Berts Lounge. Bert passed away of cancer in April of 1974. Helen continued to run the Lounge until she sold it in May of 1977. From 1977 to 1986 Helen worked for various businesses in the Beresford community (Beresford Lumber Yard, Jensen Agency, Macs Caf and the VFW), as well as selling Mary Kay cosmetics. Then in January of 1987 she purchased the Windmill Campground in Beresford and ran that until February of 2005. Helen was an avid and accomplished bowler and golfer, but most of all she loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren, family and friends. She is survived by her three children Kathy (Frank) Stanavitch of Arlington, WA; Karla (Steve) Birgen of Beresford, SD; and Brian (Jill) Peterson of Sturgis, SD; seven grandchildren, Erin (Austin) Stephens; Jamie (Ryan) Smeenk; Emily Birgen (Cole Mayer); Michael and Whitney Peterson; Mark and Megan Stanavitch and her two great grandchildren Tayten Smeenk and Paige Stephens; two brothers: Oliver (Bonnie) Hustrulid and Palmer (Marilyn) Hustrulid; two sisters: Phyllis Lundberg and Elaine Hedeen; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Burdette Peterson, her parents Bert and Ruth Hustrulid and her 4 brothers Vernon, Wayne, Lee and Roger. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Funeral services will be 10AM, Thursday, August 17 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Beresford. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2PM to 5PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford and resuming at 6:30PM with family present from 7PM to 8PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
