Obituary

Hazel J. Johnson was born October 6, 1916 in rural Baltic, SD to parents John and Hilda (Sandvig) Moller. She died March 19, 2007 at the Centerville Good Samaritan Center at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 13 days. Hazel attended elementary school in Baltic and graduated from Lyons High School in 1934. She attended Augustana College and received her teaching degree. Hazel taught at Mt. Zion rural school in Turner County. While teaching at Mt. Zion, Hazel met her future husband, Kenneth Johnson. They were married on September 17, 1938 in Olivet, SD. The couple farmed in the Centerville area. After her children were grown Hazel worked at the Centerville Good Samaritan Center for many years. Kenneth died in 1980 and Hazel continued to live on the farm until moving into Centerville in the late 1980s. She became a resident at the Good Samaritan Center on December 31, 2000 and lived there until the present time. Hazel was a member of Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church in rural Beresford. She and her husband Kenneth committed their lives to God in the early years of their marriage and faithfully raised their family in the ways of the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth, sister Dorothy Morud, 3 brothers, Gottfried, Orville and Melvin, and daughter-in-law Sharon Johnson. Among those who survive and gratefully shared her life are 3 sons: David Johnson of Pierre, SD, Duane Johnson and wife Connie of Fort Collins, CO and Richard Johnson and wife Arnie of Plano, TX; 3 daughters: Patty Harless and husband Glenn of Sidney, NE, Margie Stoneback and husband Ron of Westminster, CO and Sharon Brugger and husband Scott of Cheyenne, WY; 18 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; sister Lillian Vetere of Quebec, Canada; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church or Gideons International. Funeral services will be 10AM, Friday, March 23 at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church, rural Beresford. Visitation will be Thursday from 2PM to 8PM with family present from 6PM to 8PM with a prayer service at 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
