Harold Eugene Hofman was born August 18, 1938 in Sigel, Illinois to Anthony and Agnes (Weiffenbach) Hofman. He died March 9, 2020 at Bethesda of Beresford at the age of 81 years, six months and 21 days.
Harold was raised and attended grade school in Sigel before moving with his family to the Beresford, South Dakota area when he was 12. He attended Komstad Elementary and Vermillion High School. In August of 1957, Harold married Barbara Lundberg in Luverne, Minnesota. The couple moved to Janesville, Wisconsin where they started their family and Harold worked for General Motors in the paint department. They moved to California where Harold worked for Kawneer and at AC Transit as a bus driver. The family of five returned to South Dakota to a farm near Beresford where Harold was a dairy farmer. He and Barbara later moved into Beresford where Harold got a job as dispatcher for Beresford law enforcement and EMS.
He liked to play golf and he and Barbara enjoyed their winters in Mission, Texas.
Grateful for sharing his life is his wife of 62 years, Barbara of Beresford; two sons, Steve (Mary) Hofman of Madison, SD and Hal (Jackie) Hofman of Louisville, KY; daughter, Cindy (Bruce) Nitzel of Crete, NE; nine grandsons, Brad (Steph) Hofman of Wahpeton, ND, Luke (Lindsey) Hofman of Custer, SD, Nate (Marci) Hofman, Madison, SD, Micah (Emily) Hofman, Madison, SD, Jeremy (Allie) Hofman, Des Moines, IA, Adam (Courtney) Hofman, Atlanta, GA, Cory (Gina) Wockenfuss, Lincoln, NE, Kyle Wockenfuss, Lincoln, NE, and Cody (Brianna) Wockenfuss, Ashburn, VA; four step-grandchildren, MacKenzie Lowry, Boston, MA, Adrienne Lowry Hofman, Lexington, KY, Trevor (Erin) Nitzel, Crete, NE and Tanna (Tony) Wallin, Lincoln, NE; 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, two brothers, Charlie (JoAnn) Hofman of Rapid City and Ray (Pam) Hofman of Vermillion; sister, Mariann (Robert) Lee of Viborg and several nieces and nephews. His parents, brother, John "Jack" (Wilda) Hofman; sister, Loretta (Donovan) Hjelm; daughter-in-law, Beth (Hal) Hofman preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be 2PM Friday, March 13, 2020 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford with burial to follow at Komstad Cemetery, rural Beresford. Visitation will be 4-8PM Thursday, March 12 th at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 5-7PM and a prayer service at 7PM.
