Harlan R. Nielsen passed away Thursday, August 4, 2022 at his home in rural Beresford, SD at the age of 91 years.
He was born April 3, 1931 in Beresford to parents, John and Rose (Johnson) Nielsen. He attended school in Beresford. Harlan served in the US Army during the Korean War where he served as a Sargeant in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division, Company B from December of 1952 to January, 1954. Following his discharge, Harlan married Gwenneth Erickson at Brooklyn Church in Beresford on June 16, 1954. Harlan served on the Glenwood Country School board and was an ASC commissioner for 11 years. He was a DeKalb dealer from 1963 until 1990, served on the township board and was a life member of the VFW and American Legion. He farmed from 1955 until 2002. Harlan enjoyed going on motorcycle rides with Gwenneth.
Grateful for having shared his life are his two sons, Bob (Sheryl) Nielsen and Jack (Dianne) Nielsen of Beresford; son-in-law, Shawn DuBois of Beresford; seven grandchildren, Doug (Deb) Lyle of Beresford, SD, Angie (Mike) Wiebers of Sioux Falls, SD, Billy (Shelly) Lyle of Sioux Falls, SD, Cody (Kari) Nielsen of Rapid City, SD, Josh (Lisa) Martens of Garretson, SD, Justin (Heidi) Nielsen of Stanley, ND, and Jarod Nielsen of Beresford, SD; great-grandchildren, Derek (Madison), Gage, Larissa, Talon, Macie, Aaliyah, Rhylee, Owen, Aiden, and Arlo; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gwenneth; two daughters, Joannie DuBois and Joy Nielsen; great-grandson, Zachary Wiebers; and his brother and sister-in-law, Howard (Elaine) Nielsen.
Funeral services will be 2PM Monday, August 8, 2022 at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church in Beresford. Burial with military honors will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7PM Sunday, August 7 th at the church.
