Gregory Joseph Schumacher, Jr. of Alcester, SD, passed away peacefully on February 29th, 2024. Greg was born September 6th, 1939, to Greg and Elizabeth Schumacher in Alcester. His early education was at Dodd School, and he later attended and graduated from Alcester High School in 1957. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army and served in the military for three years. He returned to Alcester and married Vivian Hagan on September 22nd, 1962. From this union 4 children were born, Michael, Jeffrey, Karla & Helen.
Greg was the owner and operator of Greg's Transport for 38 years, hauling and delivering petroleum products in the area. Following his retirement, he continued to drive and transport for other local businesses.
Greg was a long-time member of the Alcester VFW post where he served as commander of the color guard for several years. He also served with the Alcester Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years.
Greg was an avid hunter and skillful trap shooter. He spent many days hunting deer, pheasant, fox and coyote. He found a lot of satisfaction from walking the fields with his bird dog and gun of choice for the hunt.
The state of South Dakota recognized Greg for his 40 years of dedication as an instructor for the hunter's safety course.
As a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greg volunteered for a variety of committees and offices, including the Knights of Columbus and as a Eucharist Minister to the sick and home bound.
Greg is survived by his wife of 61 years, Vivian; two sons, Michael of Sioux Falls, and Jeffrey of O'Fallon, MO, two daughters, Karla of McKinney, TX, and Helen (Ben) Lake of Virginia Beach, VA; six grandchildren, Josh Mace, Dylan and Jaden Schumacher, Elizabeth, Addison and Emma Lake; one great-grandchild, Hayden Mace; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Bernadine.
