Obituary

Grace Hammitt, 83, of Alcester, passed away peacefully at her home on January 15, 2011. She courageously battled a form of Lou Gehrigs disease. The disease took a lot away but never took away her smile or sense of humor. A prayer service will be held on Wednesday, January 19th, starting at 6 PM. Memorial services will be held Thursday, January 20th, at 2 PM. Both service locations are at the Alcester Baptist Church.

Grace was born to Olaf and Rose Jamtgaard on October 3, 1927. She was confirmed in the Peace Lutheran Church. Grace attended Alcester High School and graduated in 1945 as Valedictorian of her class. She attended General Beadle College and graduated with an elementary education certificate. Upon graduation, she took a job teaching at the Ludwig Country School where she was the teaching marme for two years.

Grace married Robert Hammitt in May of 1949. To this union, four children were born. Naomi (Keiser), David, Patricia (Jurrens), and Scott.

Grace worked a few jobs when she wasnt assisting Bob in managing their trucking company or dairy farm or being The Egg Lady. She was employed by Custom Coils (Hawarden), H&N Store (Alcester), the State Bank of Alcester, and Lighthouse Point Campground (Pierre).

Grace loved life. She loved people and people loved her! She enjoyed being outdoors. In addition to spending time with family, she thoroughly enjoyed fishing, gardening, mowing, snow birding in AZ, games with the family, and bakingmaking sure everyone had enough to eat!

Those preceding her in death were her parents, Olaf and Rose (Buum) Jamtgaard, her brothers, Eldon and Marvin Jamtgaard, and son Scott Hammitt.

Among those who survive and gratefully shared her life are Bob (husband), Naomi (Comet Haraldson) Keiser, David (Jill) Hammitt, Pat (Dale) Jurrens, sisters-in-law Martha Jamtgaard, Margaret (Donald) Hammitt, and Connie (Don) Vetos, 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

The Hammitt family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Gwen and Anne, Sanford Hospice Staff of Vermillion, for their superb care and friendship.
