Obituary

On October 12, 2023, Gloria Gale (Peterson) Rosen passed away at the Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN at age of 73, after an extensive battle with cancer.

Gloria Peterson was born in Hawarden, Iowa on January 23, 1950 to LeRoy and Gale Peterson.  She enjoyed growing up on a farm in rural Alcester, South Dakota with her family, many pets, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Gloria attended Finn country school through 7th grade and then Alcester Public Schools, graduating from high school in 1968.  Gloria developed a love of music while in high school, singing in various chorus groups, playing the bass clarinet in band and was chosen for All-State Band her senior year.  After high school, Gloria attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls.  She began working at the State Bank of Alcester in 1969, and worked there for a number of years.

Gloria enjoyed traveling with her sister, Mary, while working at the bank.  They traveled all over the United States and many European countries.  She also enjoyed several vacations with her cousin, Jane.   Gloria was passionate about learning the Swedish language and her Swedish heritage.  She studied Swedish, taking classes at Dalesburg Lutheran Church, rural Beresford.  It was during that time Gloria was given a job opportunity to travel to Sweden and work at a major international bank in downtown Stockholm.  Gloria's parents, uncle Clarence, and sister, Susan, joined her in Sweden where they spent three weeks traveling the countryside visiting relatives and seeing Ankarsrum, Sweden; Grandpa Peterson's birthplace and the area where he grew up.  This was a very special trip for all of them.

While working at Handelsbanken in Stockholm, Gloria met Hokan Rosen.  Hokan was working as an International Customer Service Representative and was assigned to assist Gloria with the Swedish language. He emigrated to the United States in January of 1984.  On March 24, 1984, they were married at the old United Church of Christ in Alcester and resided in Alcester until moving to Milwaukee, WI in 1986.  They lived and worked in Wisconsin before relocating to the Minneapolis area in 1988.  Gloria worked at Wells-Fargo from 1989 until her retirement in April, 2023.  During their marriage they enjoyed several trips to Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, France, and Mexico.

Gloria enjoyed the outdoors and took great pride in her beautiful flower gardens.  She loved feeding and watching deer, squirrels and turkeys in her backyard.  She had a special place in her heart for cats, just like her mother.  Gloria adored her niece and nephew, Mollie and Seth, spending a lot of time with them when they were growing up. Gloria was a member of the Cloudberries, a Swedish folk music group in the Minneapolis area, dressing in Swedish attire and singing Swedish songs at various events.  She was also a member of Swea Club, a Swedish women's group promoting worldwide Swedish culture.  Criteria to be in this club required her to speak Swedish and pass a Swedish language test.  With the help of Hokan, she passed the test with flying colors and was the only American in the club.

Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, brother Curtis, grandparents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.   She is survived by her beloved husband, Hokan of Wayzata, MN, sister Mary Powell (Wick) of Greenville, SC, Susan Froschheuser (Christian), nephew Seth Kersten (Sierra), niece Mollie Kersten, all of Sioux Falls, SD, and two special friends; sisters - Marcela Allison and Isolina Soto of Minnetonka, MN who hold a very special place in her heart.
