Glenn Reinhold Kroger was born July 22, 1934 to Mat and Mary (Klutman) Kroger. He passed away January 15, 2016 in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 81 years, five months and 23 days. Glenn was born and raised in Alvord, IA. After graduating from Alvord High School in 1953, he attended Stevinson Auto & Electrical School in Kansas City, MO, graduating in 1954. That same year, Glenn enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he attained a rank of Sergeant.
After serving with the USMC, Glenn decided to pursue a teaching
at the University of South Dakota and graduated in 1960. He returned in 1971 to complete his Master's degree.
He married Twyla Westra in 1959 in Inwood, IA at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. After getting married, Glenn got his first teaching position and they moved to Hill City, SD. For many summer months, Glenn enjoyed working for the National Park Service as a Park Ranger at Mount Rushmore.
In 1964, his young family moved to Alcester, SD where he taught Biology and Science at Alcester High School. In addition to teaching, he coached cross country, football, basketball and track. In the summer, he coached American Legion and youth baseball. Glenn retired from Alcester-Hudson High School in 1997 after a 35-year teaching career.
Glenn was an active outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing and cherished family camping trips. He enjoyed his weekly summer golf nights and his winter bowling league with his friends. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and San Francisco Giants. Glenn was a longtime member of Nathanael Lutheran Church and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. While living in Alcester, he served on the city Council from 1978 to 2002.
Grateful for having shared his life is his wife of 56 years, Twyla; four children, Scott (Carey) of Mitchell, SD, Kevin (Sylvia) of Centerville, SD, Connie (Scott) Fitch of Sioux Falls, SD and Kent (Stephen) of Columbus, OH; four grandchildren, Kasey, Emily, William and Kellen; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Brooklyn and Rexalynn; sister-in-law, Janice Kroger of Atlanta, GA and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Raymond and sister, Evelyn.
Funeral services will be 10AM Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester. Burial with military honors will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester. Visitation will be 4-8PM Monday at the church with the family present from 6-8PM and a prayer service at 7PM.
