Gladys M. Johnson, of rural Hawarden, passed away December 27, 2019 at the age of 91 years. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Alcester Baptist Church in Alcester, SD. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to services.
Gladys Marguerite Torney was born March 29, 1928 in Osage, IA to parents Raymond and Christol (Mortensen) Torney. She graduated from Osage High School in 1946 and then attended Sioux Falls College where she received an Associate of Arts degree in Secretarial Training in 1947 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1950. She taught for a short time in the Castlewood, SD and Alcester, SD school systems until she was united in marriage to Marvin E. Johnson on June 20, 1952 at Alcester Baptist Church. They then farmed together in the Alcester area until Marvin's death in 1996.
In addition to being a homemaker and mother, Gladys worked for over twenty years in the library of the Alcester School system. She was a member of Alcester Baptist Church, the VFW Auxiliary Post 6149, Alcester Senior Citizens, and a member of RLD study club. She loved growing flowers, reading, and solving word and jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed and looked forward to phone calls and spending time with her family and friends.
Gladys is survived by her sons, Dwayne (Shelly) Johnson, Hokah, MN and Terry Johnson, Hawarden, IA; grandchildren, Daniel (Trudy) Johnson, La Crescent, MN and Laura Johnson, Hopkins, MN; her brother, Arnold Torney, Deer Trail, CO; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Peterson, Denison, IA; several nieces and nephews; and close friends Carol Smith and Bonnie Hagen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, her parents, Raymond and Christol; sisters, Shirley Torney and Mabel Krahenbuhl; and brothers, Gene Torney, Earl Torney and Donald Torney.
