Obituary

Gladys A. Bergstrom was born August 31, 1908 in rural Volin, SD to parents Gustav and Albertina (Haugen) Nysveen. She passed away February 20, 2015 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, SD at the age of 106 years, 5 months and 20 days. Gladys was born, raised and attended school in the Volin area. She also attended three years of elementary school in Norway. She married John Bergstrom on September 23, 1939 in Hartington, NE. To this union was born a son, Edward Arnold. John and Gladys farmed in the Wakonda and Centerville areas. John passed away in August of 1973. Gladys continued to live here until moving to the Pioneer Memorial Home in December of 2010. Gladys was a hard worker. Before she was married she did housework and babysitting for many farm wives in the area. She also helped a lot on the farm. When she was 80, she sewed a field of oats. She rode in the wagon tending the seeder as Edward pulled her with the tractor. She also loved taking care of her chickens. Gladys loved to bake and was known for her excellent baked goods which she enjoyed sharing with anyone who visited her home. Gladys will be missed by her son Edward Bergstrom, Centerville; two sisters, Hazel Landman, Sioux Falls and Connie Kendall, Yankton; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 brothers, two sisters and a brother in infancy. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, February 27 at Scandia Lutheran Church, Centerville, with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery, rural Centerville. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
