Obituary

Gertrude "Gertie" Ina Anderson was born February 14, 1926 to John and Marie (Johnson) Vik in Irene, SD.  She was called home to be with the Lord on August 18, 2017 at age 91.

Gertie attended the Irene Public Schools for 12 years, graduating in 1944.  She was a member of Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church for most of her life.

Gertie earned her teaching certificate from Sioux Falls College and taught in rural schools until her marriage to Wayne "Roy" Anderson on June 1, 1948.  They lived and farmed the family property until retiring and moving to Beresford in 1998.

To this union, three boys were born:  Ronald Lee, John Alan, and Terry Leroy.  All three graduated from the SDSU College of Agricultural Sciences and enjoyed successful careers.

In addition to being a loving wife, sister, mother, homemaker, friend, and active grandmother, Gertie worked several years as a secretary at Woodfield Center children's home, and at Case Pharmacy (which was later Hill Pharmacy). She also volunteered for many years at Bethesda Home and in Beresford schools.

Gertie enjoyed reading, music (especially playing the piano and organ), and doing the daily crossword puzzle in the Argus Leader.  She would never boast that she was a good cook, but the truth was that she made wonderful meals that her family and friends always enjoyed.

Gertie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Roy, one grandson Brian Lee, two sons Ronald and John, her parents, and all of her siblings including brothers Stanley, Herbert, Elmer, Ed, Hervin, and sisters Myrtle, Verna, Selma, and Marie.

Survivors include son Terry and his wife Randi, daughters-in-law Kay (Steve Rice) Anderson and Priscilla Potas; grandchildren Aaron (Dua) Anderson, Ashley (Jon) Huber, Alan (Laura) Anderson, Brad (Kathleen) Anderson, and Lauren Wood; and great-grandchildren Elise, Howard, Harrison, Perry, and Margaret Anderson, Ziah and David Anderson, and Jack and Rae Huber.  Gertie is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends.

Visitation at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford will be held Sunday, 8/20 from 5-7pm with prayer service at 6:00.  Funeral service and burial will follow Monday, 8/21 at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church at 10am.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations to the Bethesda of Beresford Activity Fund (c/o Bethesda Home, 606 W. Cedar St.  Beresford, SD 57004), or to the Brooklyn Church Cemetery Fund (c/o Brooklyn Church, 46916 296th Street, Beresford, SD 57004).
