George Clay, 94, formerly of Beresford, SD, died Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at Centerville Care & Rehab. Viewing will be held from 12:00-1:30PM on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Worthing Cemetery, PO Box 104, Worthing, SD 57077 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
George was born May 23, 1926 on the family farm in Lincoln County, SD to Russel and Mabel (Young) Clay. He attended Lincoln Grade School and graduated from Beresford High School. George served in the US Army and was stationed in Japan during the rebuilding following WWII. Following his enlistment in the service George returned to Beresford. He married Dolores Hansen on September 19, 1948 in Sioux Falls, SD and they were blessed with four daughters.
Although he farmed all of his adult life, his priorities were always Dolores first and his girls second. George and Dolores traveled all over the country together and would visit friends and family whenever they could. He was a member of the Beresford United Church of Christ. George liked going to Twins games, attending the Chanhassen dinner theatre and watching Vanna White on "Wheel of Fortune". Having a scoop of ice cream every afternoon was an essential part of George's day, and a Rice Krispy bar would be all the better. He loved being a grandpa and great-grandpa.
Grateful for sharing in his life are his three daughters, Diane Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD, Kathy (Gary) Hansen, Eagan, MN and Faye (Roger) Schoellerman, Beresford, SD; 10 grandchildren, Chad Johnson, Rhonda TeKrony, Tim Hansen, Andrea (Dan) Murphy, Kelly (Ryan) Darwitz, Brandie (Dan) Zandstra, Cory (Stephanie) Schoellerman, Cody Schoellerman, Casey (Courtney) Schoellerman and Colby Schoellerman; and 13 great-grandchildren, Morgan, Marlie and Makenzie TeKrony, Layla and Lexi Hansen, Ryley and Kinsley Darwitz, Cortney, Charles, Casandra and Christopher Schoellerman, Holt Zandstra and Della Schoellerman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Dolores; daughter, Georgia; his parents, three brothers, Harold, Howard and Ralph Clay; two sisters, Ardes Macdonald and Ardel Calvert and his son-in-law, Tom Johnson.
