Gene Louis Hansohm, age 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Sioux Falls on September 20th, 2026.

A proud veteran, he dedicated years of service in the National Guard. Throughout his life, he was known for his strong work ethic and friendly face in the community. Working many years at Sunshine Foods and Franklin Food Market, he later went on to enjoy a well-deserved retirement after 17 years with Menards. Outside of work he could most often be found relaxing at home, passionately watching his favorite wrestling matches.

He shared a deep companionship with Opal DeMent. Thought they never married, he spent decades as a loving surrogate father to Cindy Duplex and an incredible grandfather to Katrina (Cody) Juttelstad and Jennifer (Don) Collins.

He is also survived by his children from a previous marriage, Tammy Hansohm from Beresford, Jan (Barbara), from Utah, and Kevin (Diane Hansum) from Sioux Falls, as well as his 4 great- grandchildren (Tori, Isiah, Eli, Amelia), and many family friends and "adopted family ".

He is preceded in death by his parents, Louie and Thyra (Seglem) Hansohm, and close companion Opal DeMent.

Graveside services with military honors will be October 16, 2026 at 3pm at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery located 25965 477th Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD. Memorials and cards can be sent to Wass Funeral Home, 301 N 3rd Street, Beresford, SD 57004.
