Obituary

Gary Joseph Blaschke, 82, of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away on September 16, 2025, at Sanford Health Care Center in Vermillion.

He was born on June 13, 1943, in Vermillion to John and Lucina Blaschke and grew up in the Centerville area, attending Centerville High School. In 1965, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and served for six years until his discharge on September 18, 1971.

On January 15, 1966, Gary married Mary Briggle in Omaha, Nebraska. Together they shared nearly six decades of love and raised their family. They had four children: Kelly of Vancouver, Washington; Kristen (Tim Goettsch) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Heather (Trung Vo) of Camas, Washington; and their son Todd Anthony, who passed away at birth in 1966.

Gary began his career at Raven's in Sioux Falls and later founded Gary's Repair in Spink, South Dakota. For many years, his shop was the go-to place for local farmers in need of repairs.

He loved Snap-on tools and had a lifelong passion for drag racing. Along with his friend Dale Kirk, he raced at Thunder Valley in Marion and other tracks as part of the "Over the Hill Gang." The car they built in the 1970s is still running today thanks to younger generations.

For the past two years, Gary lived at Sanford Health Care Center in Vermillion, where he received outstanding care. He was crowned King of Valentine's Day in 2025, a reflection of his gift for conversation and his ability to connect with anyone he met.

Gary is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Kelly, Kristen (Tim), and Heather (Trung); his sister Shirlee (Gene Vognild) of Sioux Falls; grandchildren Faith (Justin Nesbit), Caleb, Cassie, Logan, and Eleanor; and great-grandchildren Caroline, Norah, and River. He is also remembered fondly by many family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucina Blaschke; his son, Todd Anthony; his brother, Vernon; his in-laws, Mildred and Ladelle Briggle; and his nephew, Jeremie Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary's honor to Face It TOGETHER, in recognition of the support they provide to families impacted by addiction.
