Frank attended school in Union County, SD. He entered the United States Army in October of 1943. He was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines during WWII. He was wounded in June of 1945 while serving in the Philippines and was awarded the Purple Heart. Frank Married Anna Prinsen on September 5, 1943. After his return from the Army the couple lived in Pipestone, MN from 1946 to 1955. In 1955 they moved to the Alcester/Beresford area where Frank farmed until his retirement in 1990. Although retired, his favorite topic of conversation was always farming and anything that had to do with it. Anna passed away in January of 2006 and Frank later moved to the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls where he resided until his death.
Frank was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ in Alcester. He also belonged to the Alcester VFW, and the D.A.V. He served on the Star School Board as well as the United Church of Christ board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Anna, son David, 3 sisters and 8 brothers.
His survivors include his son Steven Hamersma, Sioux Falls; daughter Julie Halbleib and husband Randy, Fayetteville, NC; 2 granddaughters, Melissa Sievers and husband Nick, Beresford, and Stephanie Halbleib, Fayetteville, NC; grandson Gerrett Hamersma, Beresford; daughter-in-law Bonnie Hamersma, Sioux Falls; sister Clara Reitsma, Fairmont, MN; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00AM, Friday, May 22, 2009 at the United Church of Christ in Alcester, SD with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Alcester. Visitation with family present will be Thursday from 5PM to 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
