Fern Patnoe was born July 12, 1911 on a homestead near Presho, SD, the 5th of 10 children born to Nick and Margaret (Hampton) Doty. She died on April 11, 2009 at the Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 97 years, 8 months and 29 days.
Her parents had moved to western South Dakota to prove their claim on a 160 acre homestead and she was born there during the period of settlement. This sturdy pioneer woman married Lawrence Patnoe on February 2, 1937 in Sioux Falls. She graduated and spent her entire life in South Dakota farming with her husband and family near Beresford.
Fern has been an active member of the United Church of Christ in Beresford for over 60 years, engaging in numerous church activities. This hardy pioneer woman found great joy in quilting, joining her neighbors and friends for coffee and fellowship, and in baking cakes and cookies. She never failed to celebrate special events such as birthdays and graduations for the special people in her life. She was known for her exhibits at the Beresford Lions Thanksgiving Arts and Crafts show, remaining involved well into her 90s. She was an optimist, organized, frugal, and uncomplaining even during the depression or the drought years on the farm. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her children: Larry Patnoe and wife Evonne of Beloit, WI, Richard Patnoe and wife Carol of Boulder, CO, Janice Diamantine and husband Tom of Lebanon, OR, and Lynette Decker and husband Bob of Greeley, CO.
